Rebar in Revit Structure and QTO

This is another of the questions that I have been asked from time to time: "How can I get my Rebar out of Revit and into QTO?" It came up while at AU and then again this week. So I thought why not try and tackle the issue and see what I could come up with.

The first hurdle to get over is getting the Rebar out of Revit as a DWF file. If you leave the Rebar in its default state and try to export the DWF the rebar does not display. You actually end up with some frustrating head banging against the wall trying to get the Rebar out of Revit. This is because you need to tell Revit to Display the Rebar as Solid instead of Unobscured. The steps are pretty straight forward:

• Select the Rebar
• Element Properties
• View Visibility States > Edit
• Change to View as Solid instead of View Unobscured for the 3D View

 

So now that you have Rebar as Solid you can export to DWF for use in QTO.Bring the DWF into QTO and your Rebar should show up in a takeoff. See below image for example.

As a side note, if you save the view down to Rebar only, export to DWF, you could import that DWF into Navisworks as well. Then you have the Rebar available in Navisworks by using DWF...

Back from AU 2009

Hello world. Well, today is really the first day back from AU 2009. It feels strange to be back from Vegas and I am still trying to piece together everything that happened this year at AU. I hope that everyone who attended enjoyed the new venue and some of the changes. Speaking of the changes what did some of you think of changes, did you attend any of the virtual sessions? Are there any other changes that comes to mind that you would like to comment on?

For me, it was a busy time engagingcustomers and being the "expert" in the AEC Technical Specialist Lounge. Where QTO seemed to be the topic of much conversation. I think I have stack about 2 inches tall of business cards of new people that I managed to meet this year. Very exciting. When I was not in the AEC Lounge Autodesk had a large space in the exhibithall where we had various stations for individuals to ask questions as well. Those spots were equally as busy as well.

Then there were my two Hands-on Navisworks Manage labs. Both the same class, just one was full so they gave me another. There were about 45 people in each lab, so not completely full, but nonetheless challenging. I could not have pulled it off without the lab assistants help of course (thanks guys). They were instrumental in keeping everyone on track.

All in all, AU was a busy time but a success this year. With all things  there were parts that I liked and did not like. So I guess we will have to wait and see what they improve upon for next year. See you all there!
